White is such a useful glaze.  A nice clean option for functional ware and a wonderful accent to sculptural work.

Sharon Mikkelson demonstrated her brushwork techniques on white glaze at the 2007 Potters Workshop.  Here are her recipes.

White Crusher Glaze Cone 9-10 by Tom Coleman

    Custer Feldspar 29

    Whiting 11

    Talc 11

    Kaolin 26

    Silica 20

This is a glaze recipe that I got from a Tom Coleman workshop many years ago. It is a great glaze for doing brushwork and great for any functional work. Great for dinnerware. No crazing and holds up well under daily use. It is a buttery semi-matt glaze. I use it for my Black and White horses.

Gossu Stain by Larry Elsner

    100g black colbalt oxide

    100g manganese dioxide

    100g red iron

    50g colemanite

Age or Ball Mill I mix this up in a 1 quart jar, for a black stain. This is what I use over top of the Crusher Glaze for my Black and White horse design. If diluted more, it makes a beautiful blue grey stain.

Overglaze Cone 9-10

Green

    80g red iron

    20g colemanite

Light Colbalt Blue

    35g Colbalt Carb

    10g Colemanite

    5g Titanium

Dark Iron Blue

    25g Red Iron

    15g Cobalt

    10g Manganese

Iron Yellow

    35g iron

    15g titanium

    10g colemanite

Black Stain (weak=blue-grey)

    25g Iron

    15g Cobalt

    10g Manganese Dioxide

    5g Chrome

    10g Gerstly Borate

Ball Mill or Age. I mix these up in a pint jar.

Stoney - Cone 10 redux (also works in ox)

Matt bright white glaze.  Will work at higher temps, but develops flaws if underfired.

Swedish Cream

Cone 10 oxidation - matte, off white.  Good choice to use for brushwork.  Takes colorants well.

Whiting              885

Zinc Oxide          808

Barium Carb       2109

Angela Yates' Teapot Crawl Glaze - Cone 10, opaque white

Here are two variations of a cone 10 crawl glaze. The first produces large, wet-looking beads of glaze with a traditional crawl look. The second gives a sharper, cracked-earth network of crawling. Both are opaque white. As with any crawl glaze, apply thickly.

Angela Yates’s Teapot Crawl

Measure equal parts by volume:
Nepheline Syenite
Magnesium Carbonate
Silica

Dry Crawl Variation

Measure parts by volume:
Nepheline Syenite 1
Magnesium Carbonate 7
Silica 1

PV  Cone 6-10 redux or ox

Semi transparent, smooth semi-matte white.  Good for functional ware.  Takes painting well - see Sharon Mikkelsen's post at top for brushwork ideas.
