It is true that any smoke will create an effect on work with a good coat of terra sig.  (See for our Easy Terra Sig recipe.)

I made this piece from Tom Coleman Porcelain with three coats of terra sig and bisqued to 06.  I then held it over a lit match to get greys, browns and earthy yellows.  It took about 50 matches to get this coloring.  The clay was then sprayed with a protective coat (Duncan brand ceramic sealer).

The piece is currently on display as part of the Clay Arts Utah Fall Gallery Show, Intimate Wares.  Show runs September 19th to November 7th at Red Kiln Gallery (1700 So 393 E, SLC).  See photos of the show at
