Susan Harris - Artist Statement

My ceramic work evolves from my long-held fascination with artifacts from the past, most notably ancient oriental and Etruscan bronze ritual vessels. I am preoccupied with the mysterious purposes, intricate surface details and mythological symbols, which characterize these objects. Using clay instead of metal, not to mention a contemporary rather than ancient temperament, I challenge myself to re-interpret their forms and meanings. Recent works continue to reference techniques and forms I have explored in the past. They are fired in a variety of processes, especially reduction cooling, where no glaze is applied to the external surface of the works in order to retain crisp and intricate textural details. The appearance is reminiscent of wrought iron and other ancient metals. It has been a logical step for me to investigate similar forms with greater functional intent, and to finish them with the addition of color and pattern resulting from atmospheric firings in salt and wood fired kilns. I enjoy the fact that my pieces do not speak of this time and place in history, but could exist at any moment in the past or future as well.

Susan Harris is Professor of Art & Design at Southern Utah University, where she has taught Ceramics, Sculpture and Three Dimensional Design since 1996. She received a BA degree in anthropology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and her MFA in ceramics from Utah State University. For 17 years, she taught as Artist-in-Residence at the Alliance for the Varied Arts in Logan, while also teaching workshops nationally. Her work
has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally, in solo and group exhibitions, and can be seen in public and private collections throughout Utah, the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia. It has appeared in many publications, including 21st Century Ceramics in the United States and Canada, Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics Art & Perception and many other books. She has taught workshops in Universities, Art Centers and Craft Residency Programs. She is a Fellow of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.

Tell Tale Tiles: Deadline, Dec 1, 2009

Tell-Tale Tiles & Fractured Fantasies explores contemporary tile making and ceramic mosaic as a story-telling medium in the spirit of artists Henry Chapman Mercer and Isaiah Zagar. The scope of the exhibition will be broadened to include social, political, personal and family stories.

Artworks 12"x12" up to 36"x36" and up to 60 pounds.

Entry Fee: $45. Entry online through Juried Art Services. Fee covers 3 photos. Can be 3 of 1 artwork, 2 of 1 and 1 of another, etc.

Commission: 40%

Art at the Main accepting artist applications

The Art at the Main gallery, located in the main library building downtown, is accepting applications for new artists. The gallery is a coop gallery. It is a small gallery space and most of the artists are painters. There is some space for 3D works and more can be made. For more information see:

Utah Teapot Show: Deadline April 2010

Clay Arts, Utah and The Tea Grotto will hold a teapot competition and show in April, 2010. That gives you about 6 months to get your best teapot made and we want to help. The place to start is the show's web site, http://www.utahteapotshow.com. Of course, you will find information about how to the enter the show, but there is much more. You will find links to information about tea, teapot design and construction, and to local resources for learning more.

Entry Fee: (probably $15 per entry, 3 entry limit).

Eligibility: teapots made of clay, made in Utah, made in the last 2 years. CAU membership not required.

Prizes: There will probably be some prize money for the best of show and peoples choice awards.

Pottery Class

This is from the Louisiana State University School of Art in Baton Rouge. The exhibit will be Feb 20 - March 21, 2010. The exhibit is called "8 Fluid Ounces."

I have a call from 2007 (http://www.design.lsu.edu/cup_call.pdf) At that point, it was open to all artist in the US. Fee was $15 for up to 3 entries, 30% commission.

Clay for Kids - Teachers Workshop September 26

Clay for Kids

Clay Arts, Utah will hold its Third Annual Teachers Workshop on September 26, 2009 from 9 am - 2 pm at Pioneer Craft House, 3300 South 5th East. With a focus on elementary education this year, teachers have been invited to learn handbuilding techniques, age appropriate projects, glaze application and kiln firing.

Workshops like this are central to the Clay Arts, Utah mission. Last year we were able to reach over 2000 students by helping their teachers learn clay techniques and projects. These workshops require significant volunteer time to develop and present. Our heartfelt thanks to Cindy Diaz and Margo Bryan Petersen for being chairman of this years event.

Katou sensei is a diligent student of Japan's 10,000 year old ceramic history, but he is also one of the foremost artists in Shigaraki who is driving this ancient kiln site's richest traditions forward. Shigaraki has produced some of the best ceramics the world has ever seen, and Katou sensei will be here to share his perspectives and his work with the Utah clay community.
